Chasing Personal Bests at Loskop – A Winter Trip
Mid-June at Loskop Dam. The air is crisp, the water quiet, and most anglers would tell you the species list is limited this time of year. But our guide, CJ, smiled and said, “Winter is when you catch your PB at Loskop.”
That was all the motivation we needed.
Settling In for a 3-Day Adventure
We arrived early morning and checked into our accommodation – spotless, spacious, and perfectly set up for anglers. There was more than enough room to park and charge the boat, fuel available on site, and a smooth launch area with shaded parking for most of the day. The kind of setup that makes you feel like the trip is already off to a good start.
Our mission?
To learn, explore, and level up our bass-fishing game – from techniques to understanding when to move, when to stay, and how to make winter fishing work in your favour.
Day One: The Search Begins
Slow. Really slow.
But that’s winter bassing for you.
We spent most of the first day scouting, covering water, testing areas, and building a game plan. By sunset we felt confident: Day Two was going to produce.
Day Two: Cracking the Code
We started running the areas we had marked the previous day, and soon enough the fish started coming in. Nothing massive yet, but consistent action on light lines and small baits. With both of us on the board, we decided it was time to switch it up and try some new techniques.

Enter the crankbait.
CJ pointed out a spot known for producing on the crank, and on the very first cast I could feel the lure bouncing through rock and structure. “Exactly where you want to be,” he said. That gave me the confidence to fire a cast into what looked like open water.
Second cast.
Lure hits the water.
Slow wind.
A few bumps over rock…
And then boom — a solid hit.
I instantly knew this fish was different. Heavier. Stronger. My hands started shaking as the fish rose and I finally saw it – my new PB. After a careful fight and a lot of nerves, we netted her. Celebrations, high-fives, and a weight of 3.46 kg on the scale. A few photos, a gentle release, and one very happy angler.

Day Three: Momentum & More Magic
The rest of that day – and the day after – delivered fantastic fish on a variety of techniques. Quality bites, consistent action, and a feeling that Loskop had truly shown us its winter potential.
