Cahora Bassa dams off the mighty Zambezi River in the Tete province of Mozambique – this remote destination is still home to some of the largest tigerfish in Africa. This remote destination is definitely one of Africa’s most productive fisheries. In Cahora Bassa, tigerfish can reach impressive sizes, with fish weighing up to 25 pounds not uncommon. To target these trophy fish, anglers need to be well-prepared and equipped with the right gear, techniques and guides at your disposal.

Commercial flights are available from Johannesburg – Tete direct, 1h40 minutes long. A minibus will transfer you from the airport to the water’s edge with refreshments on ice & snacks for the journey. From there, a 45-minute boat ride will land you on the island.

The main structure of the lodge is right on the tip of the peninsula – there is a rock pool, a large bar, two dining tables and inside/outside lounging areas. A fire is lit every night with camp chairs set around to reflect on your surroundings.

Cahora Bassa is a renowned destination for tigerfish enthusiasts looking to target trophy-sized fish in the waters of the Zambezi River. With its stunning scenery and challenging fishing conditions, this region of Mozambique is a must-visit for any angler looking for a once-in-a-lifetime fishing experience.

Fishing is done from Pelican boats (21ft and 27ft) around structures beneath the surface – in and around dry, dead trees and logs, against rocky banks and cliff faces, and over rocky pinnacles and outcrops that protrude from the water.

The prime time for fishing at Cahora Bassa is between September and February during the rainy season when the dam and rivers are full and incredibly active. The river inflows during this time are a sight to behold, with muddy water colliding with the clean water of the dam, creating an otherworldly fishing experience.

Slow-rolling big lures and flies on the bottom between the deeper tree lines generally produce the bigger fish. However, during spawning season, the fish make their way to shallow waters and river inlets, providing anglers with the opportunity to catch a true Cahora Bass giant in the shallow water. It’s a thrilling experience to witness the power and strength of these magnificent creatures up close.

And let’s not forget about the importance of finding baitfish, which can certainly put you onto fish. With the help of our knowledgeable guides, we can explore the nooks and crannies of the lake to ensure that you hook up into some decent fish. So join us on this incredible adventure, where fishing is not just a sport, but a way to connect with the natural world around us.
